Background:

Senator Schiff has spearheaded efforts to protect public lands and has been a steadfast champion of environmental activism, recently introducing the Rim of the Valley Corridor Preservation Actlandmark legislation that would protect some of the last wild and open spaces in the Los Angeles area. Recently, Schiff fought alongside his Western Senate colleagues, both Democratic and Republican, to successfully strip a provision from the reconciliation bill that would have mandated the sale of treasured public lands, including National Forests, across California and 10 other Western states. Schiff has also used his voice on the Senate Agriculture Committee to push for the responsible management of forests like those around Tahoe and proper wildfire management policies.

As the Ranking Member of the Fisheries, Water, and Wildlife Subcommittee on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Schiff has used his platform to lead a hearing on the importance of funding the Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds and has worked with his colleagues to speak up in support of strong environmental protections at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He also pushed the administration to undo dangerous rollbacks of Endangered Species Act protections.

Schiff tenaciously fought against Senate Republicans’ efforts to ignore the law to pass resolutions terminating California’s vehicle emissions standards anddenounced President Donald Trump’s signing of those resolutions. Additionally, Schiff cosponsored Senator Alex Padilla’s (D-Calif.) West Coast Ocean Protection Act, which would permanently prohibit new leases for offshore oil and gas development along California’s coastline.
