STATEMENT: Sen. Schiff on Israel-Hamas Ceasefire and Hostage Deal

U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after the Biden Administration announced that Israel and Hamas had reached a ceasefire deal that will see the release of hostages.

“I’m encouraged by today’s ceasefire deal and the preliminary framework for a release of hostages, and the provision of additional humanitarian aid. We must hope and pray that this is the beginning of the end of the war and the release of all hostages. Since Hamas’ unprovoked and brutal attack on Israel on October 7th, we have witnessed an unimaginable human tragedy. The news of a cessation of hostilities is deeply welcome.

“Ultimately, the region will not be secure until Hamas no longer maintains its iron grip on the governance of Gaza, threatening both Palestinians and Israelis who want to live in peace and security. The United States will continue to stand with Israel and will continue to ensure that our closest ally and the only democracy in the region has the support it needs to defend itself.

“I want to thank the Biden Administration for their tireless work to reach this ceasefire deal, and I look forward to the return of many of the hostages, including several Americans, to their families and communities.”

Background:

Schiff has repeatedly reinforced his unwavering support for Israel, both in the days immediately following the October 7th attack, and working to secure critical security assistance in the months since.

Last year, as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Schiff voted for the Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, which allocated over $26 billion to support Israel and provide humanitarian relief to Gaza.
