STATEMENT: Sen. Schiff Statement on U.S. Military Action in Iran

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) released the following statement on new U.S. military action in Iran launched earlier today.

“Donald Trump is drawing our country into yet another foreign war that Americans don’t want and Congress has not authorized. And he has acknowledged that as a result, American troops may be lost.

“There is no doubt that the Iranian regime is responsible for killing thousands of its own citizens and sponsoring acts of terrorism against its neighbors and the United States. The American people stand in solidarity with the Iranian people protesting their own murderous and authoritarian government. However, President Trump had no authority under the Constitution to initiate this war of choice, place the lives of U.S. servicemembers in harm’s way, and risk a broader conflict without making the case to the American people and seeking congressional approval.

“President Trump and senior members of his Administration claimed just eight months ago, when Trump last initiated military action against Iran, that Iran’s nuclear program had been ‘obliterated.’ Yet here we are all over again, and with an explicit stated goal of regime change. The Trump-Vance administration is resorting to war once again, even as Administration has not and is not able to articulate a clear justification, strategy, and end to this new war.

“Americans do not want another forever war in the Middle East. Senators Kaine, Paul, Schumer and I have introduced another War Powers Resolution to prevent U.S. Armed Forces from taking further action against Iran without authorization from Congress. We should return to session immediately and vote on the resolution.

“We must not allow ourselves to be drawn into another unending conflict.”
