STATEMENT: Sen. Schiff on Nomination of Jeanine Pirro to Serve as Permanent U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement on the nomination of Jeanine Pirro to serve as the permanent U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

President Donald Trump named Pirro to the role in an interim capacity after he was forced to withdraw his last nominee, Ed Martin, amid bipartisan scrutiny and a hold placed by Schiff.

“Jeanine Pirro is the latest in a long line in Trump loyalists and conspiracy theorists to receive a nomination, but her blind obedience to Donald Trump is nearly unrivaled among his ardent supporters.

“Her unflinching commitment to promoting the Big Lie about the 2020 election landed Fox News in court and cost them hundreds of millions in damages. Her nonstop attempt to rewrite the history of January 6th contributed to the President’s decision to pardon of hundreds of violent criminals who attacked law enforcement.

“But the naming of someone that even Fox News has had to condemn and pull off the air should be a wake-up call for every one of my colleagues in the Senate. For an important prosecutorial position like this one, the country has a right to demand a serious and principled public servant. Jeanine Pirro is not it. There must be the same serious scrutiny of this nomination, as we previously demanded of Ed Martin’s failed nomination.

“If even Fox News says they ‘don’t trust her to be responsible’, then who does?”
